  6. Minutes of the NOC-Tool Catalogue Revisions Working Group (NOCtool2)

  11. The NOCtool2 Working Group met at the 22nd IETF in Santa Fe.  The
  12. meeting served primarily to report on the revision of the RFC 1147/FYI
  13. 2, and again served as a forum for discussion of the ``living
  14. documents'' problem.  The agenda was as follows,

  19.    o NOCtools' resolution of the ``living documents'' problem
  20.    o Planned wrap up of revision process

  26. Co-Chair Shuffling    The replacement of Gary Malkin by Darren Kinley
  27.                      during the month of October was announced.  Thanks
  28.                      to Gary for his efforts.
  29. Current status       Enger, Kinley, and Malkin each fumbled putting
  30.                      things behind schedule.  After much whining,
  31.                      pleading, and shaming their lives were spared.
  32.                      Schedules have been revised.
  33. Revised Schedules    Internet-Draft to be prepared for the month of
  34.                      February, its availability (including TOC) widely
  35.                      announced, late submissions to be included as
  36.                      required, and finally document to be submitted to
  37.                      the RFC editor.  The delay from announcement as ID
  38.                      to submission to the RFC editor will depend on the
  39.                      number of late entries received, the feedback from
  40.                      the community, and will be left to the discretion
  41.                      of the RFC editors.
  42. ``Living Documents''    Technical and philosophical aspects of this
  43.                      problem were discussed extensively.  Everyone
  44.                      agreed that ``high-tech'' solutions were still not
  45.                      available nor would they be in the very near
  46.                      future.  The group decided to schedule a BOF on
  47.                      this topic at the upcoming IETF in San Diego.
  48.                      Two sets of mechanisms and procedures to aid in the
  49.                      maintenance and distribution of this document were
  50.                      put forward, improved, and adopted by the group.

  58.                    1.    Anonymous FTP retrieval with automated email
  59.                          submission.
  60.                          The official/edited document will be made
  61.                          available via anonymous FTP as well as an
  62.                          automated electronic distribution tool
  63.                          (listserv) as a whole or in pieces.  Entries
  64.                          can be submitted via electronic mail and made
  65.                          immediately available in an unofficial/unedited
  66.                          portion of the distribution.  An editor will
  67.                          occasionally verify these last entries and
  68.                          include them in the official document.
  69.                          Possible homes might include Merit or
  70.                          Washington University.

  72.                    2.    Usenet news.

  74.                          A news hierarchy similar to this was discussed.

  76.                          alt.noctools.announce (moderated) A small
  77.                          number of entries will be posted daily so that
  78.                          during a month the entire document will be
  79.                          posted once.

  81.                          alt.noctools.wanted (unmoderated) Questions of
  82.                          the nature ``I'm looking for...''  will be
  83.                          posted to this group.

  86.                          announced here.  A Gateway between this group
  87.                          and the automated email submission address
  88.                          should be put in place.

  91.                          tools can be posted here.  Hopefully, they will
  92.                          also be sent to the tool creator.

  98.                          functions could be located very near to the FTP
  99.                          retrieval and automated submissions service.

  120. continue to solicit and accept new entries, prepare draft document.

  122. Joyce Reynolds:  Consider funding for maintenance of ``living
  123. documents'' problem vis-a-vis the Internet Society.

  125. Darren Kinley, Joyce Reynolds:  Compile list where NOCtools catalog
  126. availability announcement will get the widest possible distribution.

  128. Robert Enger, Darren Kinley, Chris Myers, Mike Patton:  Properly define
  129. Usenet newsgroups to be created and write charters for these groups as
  130. required.

  132. Chris Myers:  Make a home for anonymous FTP and automated electronic
  133. submissions and distribution tool.
